Castletown
Course Rating 18/20
Clubhouse Facilities 6/10
Hotel Facilities 8/10
In the middle of the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man is reached be ferry or by air from Blackpool. Castletown is located on a sort of triangular-shaped peninsula surrounded by sea. They say that on the 17th hole a sliced drive could end up in Ireland, Scotland, England or Wales. Whatever, this course is exposed to all winds and only the bunkers give any real shelter. Only a few small dunes and rocks give any relief to this flat, superbly-turfed landscape. The absence of any really high dunes also allows some splendid views over the cliffs, rocks and the Irish Sea. After the war Mackenzie Ross brought Castletown back to life with all the talent he showed at Turnberry and even a tough of genius. This is a golfer’s paradise on the edge of a rock, but it can be hell if ever a storm sets in and sends players scampering to seek refuge in the huge and very comfortable hotel on the course. We would recommend a visit here on a fine summer’s day.
