Castletown Golf Links Voted 81
2004, GOLF WORLD TOP 100
NOVEMBER ISSUE, OUT OCTOBER 8
Castletown Golf Links: Why it’s so good: This
is links golf at its best- how nature, not mankind meant it to be,
with firm, tight fairways and fast running greens. The course lies
on the Langness Peninsula a beautiful rugged strip of land at the
southern tip of the island. Stunning Views of the Irish Sea and the
rugged coastal cliffs are visible from every hole and are only masked
by daunting dunes that form part of the overall playing experience.
From Aberdovey to Woodhall Spa, The K Club to Carnoustie, Golf World’s
panel of experts and reader testers has rated and reviewed hundreds
of courses in the British Isles to produce this definitive list of
the nation’s Top 100.
Among the established near perfect world-beaters, great strides
have been made by some up-and-coming courses and there are also
eight new entries, the highest being Greg Norman’s magnificent
Doonbeg in County Clare.
Another stunning Irish links, Old Head of Kinsale, was the highest
climber, leaping 38 places and further validating club President
John O’Connor’s claim that it would be the No.1 course
on Earth within the next five years. It’s certainly heading
in the right direction but still has some way to go to dislodge the
likes of Muirfield, St Andrews, Royal County Down, Royal Birkdale
and Turnberry.
From 1 to 100, this list is the ultimate guide to golf in these
Isles. Discover the true Top 100 in our November issue, out on October
8th. How many have you played?
