History

Whilst playing the 7th Hole named the Race Course you may just wonder why the name, well here a little piece of history is to be found. A century and a half before the first ever English Derby the Isle of Man and the then Earl of Derby also the Lord of Mann held the first ever Manx Derby over three furlongs. I might add that this was also thirty-nine years prior to the Newmarket race, which has been proclaimed to be the oldest horse race in existence.

Back to golf and in 1979 The PGA Cup was held at Castletown. These were matches where the GB and Ireland club pro’s took on the USA club Pro’s and beat them might add. This Competition is still in existence and is played for every two years in the UK.

Now for the past 6 years Castletown has hosted one of the biggest P.G.A. Northwest Pro Am’s, known as the Manx Classic, in 2003it was sponsored by HSBC and Dickinson Cruickshank.

On the 10th June 2002 for the first time we held the 5th event on The Europro Tour this event is for the up and coming professional stars of golf.

In October 2003 we were also host to the Duke of York Young Championship for the first time, with competitors for all over Europe under the age of 18 taking part.
