Course Alterations
February 1st 2007
It would have been easy to keep adding length to the course by building new tee boxes 50 yards further back from their existing position, but, all this does is make an already tough course for most into an impossible course for many due to the carries that would be required from the golfer. So, we started our bunker development program, on November 1st 2006, in a bid to significantly improve the quality and playability of Castletown Golf Links for all levels of golfer.
For example, the 2nd hole a 393 yds par 4, was a straight, flat hole with two large bunkers, one 20 yds short and to the right of the green and one greenside to the left, that rarely came into play as they sat too far from the edge of the green. We have moved the bunker on the right 10 yds left and made two smaller more rounded bunkers that now obscure the front right side of the green making club selection more difficult. The bunker on the left is now smaller, deeper and sits on the fringe of the green and will gather any shot veering to the left. The introduction of three fairway bunkers, two left and one right, make the tee shot more challenging and decisions will need to be made whether the bunkers can be taken on with driver or lay up with 3-wood or long iron. These fairway bunkers rise from the ground and give the hole a new shape and definition.
We were due to complete 9 holes within our timeframe and finally managed 11 with work starting on the remaining holes in November 2007. The holes we have
completed so far are: 1,2,3,4,5,13,14,15,16, 17& 18

April 2008 will be the opening of the new layout.
Mark Kitching, our Head Greenkeeper, has overseen the bunker development and said “I’m delighted with the progress we have made this winter. The turf has knitted together well over the last couple of months, the bunkers are shaping up nicely and we are on course for the bunkers to come into play early April in readiness for the start of the competitive season. The feedback I have received from our Members has been very encouraging and I’m looking forward to starting the final phase in November”
Our Head Professional, Michael Brooks, adds “It’s an exciting time for Castletown Golf Links and it’s Members. Once the bunker development program has been completed we will see a very different course. The greenside bunkers have been rebuilt closer to the edge of the green, which reduces the size of the target, making a more demanding approach shot that rewards only the more accurate shots. The greenside bunkers have been transformed into smaller and deeper pot bunkers that will collect any wayward shot and gives the golfer a more difficult bunker shot to the pin. While Castletown is now a more demanding course on which to score it has not lost any of it’s charm and remains a challenge for all golfers.” |
